Liking Lanzarote – Hotel Costa Calero

After a bit of a stressful first half of 2016, my husband and I had a lovely all-inclusive retreat to the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote.

The Canaries were new to us both and we had seen a bit of the main four on programmes like ‘A place in the sun’, so although we had a relaxing all-inclusive trip we hired a car with the intention of at least having a bit of an explore and scout for potential home away from home sites.

We stayed at Hotel Costa Calero, which is about 20 mins from the airport in Arrecife. The first thing we noticed upon arriving in Lanzarote was how barren and black it was. It was like driving around the moon surface. Lanzarote is a volcanic island and as such most of the terrain is hard and dry and there is not a lot of trees and other flora.

The hotel itself was ok, a little worn and tired, but we didn’t plan on getting up to much and it seemed perfectly fine for that purpose.

We upgraded to the ‘Prestige’ class, which pays for itself fairly quickly. It includes all drinks (including some yummy local wines), better in-room facilities like coffee machine and toiletries, and daily entrance to the Thalasso Spa.

There are three pools, and, in typical English fashion, you need to get up at the break of dawn to get a pool chair in a prime space. We never got to go anywhere near the main pool due to the hoards of people in the ‘spots’ every day from dawn to dusk. or the towels over the seats for which people never appear.

We still managed to find two seats together each day and made our camp around the salt water pool, the second largest. There is another smaller pool situated in a somewhat jungle/garden type setting but we found there to be too many insects due to the proximity to the trees.

IF you want a cocktail by the pool you wont be happy. There is no pool service and only one bar open most of the day at the front of the hotel, I mean, you probably could get a cocktail if you asked but it wasn’t something that was openly advertised.

The smaller pool bar near the insect hub is only open a couple of hours and sells beer and a few barely alcoholic frozen drinks.

The Thalasso Spa is lovely and a nice escape from the rest of the hotel. It is around £6 per person per day unless you have upgraded.

The nightly shows are pretty basic and we only bothered with one, the bar service was pretty appalling as well due to the demand.

All in all the hotel was ok. I would go back, I suppose, but wont lose any sleep over it if I don’t!
