Liking Lanzarote – Hotel Costa Calero

Image
After a bit of a stressful first half of 2016, my husband and I had a lovely all-inclusive retreat to the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote. The Canaries were new to us both and we had seen a bit of the main four on programmes like ‘A place in the sun’, so although we had a relaxing all-inclusive trip we hired a car with the intention of at least having a bit of an explore and scout for potential home away from home sites. We stayed at Hotel Costa Calero, which is about 20 mins from the airport in Arrecife. The first thing we noticed upon arriving in Lanzarote was how barren and black it was. It was like driving around the moon surface. Lanzarote is a volcanic island and as such most of the terrain is hard and dry and there is not a lot of trees and other flora. The hotel itself was ok, a little worn and tired, but we didn’t plan on getting up to much and it seemed perfectly fine for that purpose. We upgraded to the ‘Prestige’ class, which pays for itself fairly quickly. It i...

Getting into Greece – Zakynthos – Part 2

Image
The remainder of our Greek break was all rain and gloom. I’m drawing now of my previous experiences of the beautiful Idyll that is Zakynthos. One of my absolute favourite places on the Island is St. Nicholas Beach. This little hub on the south east point of the Island is known for its water sports. In the height of summer there is constant jet skiing, canoes, pedalos and paragliding. Don’t think for one second I entertained the idea of participating in anything so extreme. St Nicks, for me, i the home of my all time favourite swim. The swimming side is very shallow and very vast and, in the summer, like a luke warm bath. It is my favourite place to just bob about and enjoy being alive. There is a bar on site serving all your favourite  drinks and, although there is a charge for the sun-loungers (not uncommon), it is very affordable. For the more adventurous types, the jetskiing LOOKS fun. I’m more the floating-by-life kinda girl but my 80 year old father in law went on ...

Getting into Greece – Zakynthos – Part 1

Image
At the beginning of May I found myself back in Zakynthos (or Zante as it is commonly known). This marked my third time to the Island and my husbands billionth (or so it seems). This trip was a family affair with two young adults and an 81 year old Grandfather accompanying us. We were all set for 6 days of sun and scenery and amazing Greek food. Let’s just say two out of three aint bad. We arrived early afternoon on Easter Sunday. We anticipated it to be quiet, after our recent trip to Kefalonia, where we discovered nothing happens until after Easter in the Islands. We weren’t wrong, there was absolutely nothing open, which was fine as it was a major religious holiday and pretty much everyone was roasting lamb in the front gardens. We stay in the Kaminia Villas  which is a set of three 2BR villas just outside of the village of Lithakia. It’s lovely there with everything you would want or need. And so, so quiet. That evening we dined at Taverna Vardiola, as it was nearby and o...

Assessing Airlines – British Airways – Long Haul

I recently flew to New York City with British Airways and it gave me the idea to review the different planes and journey’s I’ve taken as there have been a few now and many more to come. We picked BA as the price to fly over Easter break was pretty competitive and BA, we thought, were quite reputable. It is after all the UK’s national airline. Now, the issues we had with this particular flight, both in and out, are quite nit-picky, some may say. But as a 100% advocate of impeccable customer service BA really need to up their game. We logged on to their website to check in online. We did this at exactly 24 hours to the second before the flight, as advised. There was only a few seats available and only one row with three together. Given we were travelling with a nervous teenager we had to take the tree together, which unfortunately was the very last row in between the toilets. As it turns out most people pay the extra £30 each to pre-book their seats (an option familiar for low-r...
